Recall for replacement: GRIGRI 2

To top of page
Petzl has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2 can cause internal damage, such that the GRIGRI 2 handle may become stuck in the open position.

When the handle is stuck in this position the assisted braking function is disabled. A damaged GRIGRI 2 in this configuration will function similarly to a manual belay device (e.g. tube style device).

When using a damaged GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the position as shown in Figure 1, failure to control the braking side of the rope will increase the risk of an uncontrolled descent. A GRIGRI 2 with a damaged handle must be immediately retired from service.

DMM International Recall on the Dragon Camming Device in size 6

To top of page
DMM International has identified a raw material problem that may affect the strength on certain models of the Dragon Cam in size 6 (Product Code A7056A).

This recall only involves the Dragon Cam in size 6 and no other sizes of Dragon Cam are involved.

The problem originates from a structural defect in a raw material that is uniquely used to make a single component on the size 6 Dragon.

The raw material involved is used to make the aluminium axle boss on the Dragon Cam in size 6. DMM International has discovered that the components made out of this defective material can develop cracks and that these cracks can grow and propagate with time. This could cause the units to fail below their rated strength.

The units affected were made between the 28th April and the 30th June and there are 604 units in the market that could be affected.

The affected units have one the following serial numbers. The serial number is located on the back edge of one of the two centre cam lobes.

If you own a Dragon Cam 6 with a serial number listed below then you should immediately discontinue all use of this product.

The product can be returned via your retailer or directly to DMM so that it can be replaced.

Ortovox S1 may show an automatic flagging

To top of page
Please check if your S1 requires a software update, especially if you have a new unit (identifiable by its orange on/off switch and “Version 2.1” on the display), which was purchased as of August 2009.
Ortovox S1 random units of the latest production run may show an automatic flagging within the fine search boundaries due to undefined impulses. That is, the S1 unit is flagging a signal even if the user did not press the marking button. The user can readily delete this unexpected flagging so the search can be continued; however, this break within the search process is an unwelcome interruption. ORTOVOX was able to eliminate this unwelcome interruption with a slight software adaptation.

Appeal to check Mammut Via Ferrata Y-sling sets

To top of page
When running checks on its Via Ferrata Y-sling sets (art. no. 2130-00080), Mammut Sports Group AG found one which was incorrectly manufactured. The defect is not design-related but is due to human error. Since Mammut Sports Group AG cannot guarantee with absolute certainty that this was a one-off, it is asking all owners of Mammut Via Ferrata Y-sling sets to check their sets without delay.
The only product affected is the Via Ferrata Y-sling set (art. no. 2130-00080), which has a built-in rope brake. None of Mammut’s other via ferrata sets is affected

Salomon SAS has decided to carry out a voluntary and precautionary recall of the toe pieces

To top of page
14.10.2009 | Salomon SAS has decided to carry out a voluntary and precautionary recall of the toe pieces of the below listed models of TECNOpro-branded ski bindings. The ski binding models subject to the recall were produced between July and October 2008.

In certain circumstances, the toe components of the below listed models may not fully secure the ski boot into the binding, possibly causing the binding to release inadvertently, posing a falling risk to the skier.
Therefore, these binding models must no longer be used until the toe component is replaced.

The toe components of the following models are affected:
Techno PRO branded models:

TL 70, TL 80, TL 70 SP, TL 80 SP, TL 70 SR

Consumers should not disassemble the bindings. Consumers should bring the TECNOpro TL 70 or TL 80 bindings to an authorized Ski Dealer. The authorized dealer will look at the production date on the toe piece and will confirm whether your toe component is subject to the recall.
Authorized dealers will replace the toe component of the listed bindings free of charge, with new toe components produced in 2009 that are compatible with the listed binding models.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING! Snowpulse avalanche «Life Bag», Winter 08-09

To top of page
In the winter of 2008-09 Snowpulse Lifebag airbag backpacks have been deployed over 1500 times. Some in real avalanches, most of them for training; and the huge majority of the time they have functioned properly and satisfied
our customers. However, a default on the Velcro on the top of the Lifebag bag may lead to a dysfunction of the airbag. This failure results in non inflation of the airbag and has been reported in 0,5% of the inflations done
this year.
